Compliance & safety
We follow OSHA, DOT, FDA, and EPA guidelines for used IBC tanks. Safety and regulatory compliance are built into every process.
Inspection logs
Each tote receives a comprehensive cage and valve inspection before resale. We document condition, test results, and any repairs performed. This documentation follows the tote to its next user.
Material tracing
We track prior contents and restrict food-grade reuse accordingly. Our database maintains complete history for every tote we process, enabling full traceability from source to destination.
Transport safety
Loads are strapped, wrapped, and documented for DOT compliance. Our drivers are trained in proper load securement. Every shipment includes appropriate paperwork.
Regulatory framework
Federal regulations we follow
State and local compliance
Safety programs and training
Employee safety training
All employees complete comprehensive safety training before working with IBC totes. Training covers material handling, chemical awareness, PPE requirements, and emergency procedures. Annual refresher training is mandatory.
Forklift certification
Forklift operators hold current OSHA certification. We conduct daily equipment inspections and maintain detailed maintenance logs. Operators must demonstrate proficiency before handling loads.
Personal protective equipment
Required PPE varies by task and material. Standard equipment includes safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and gloves. Chemical handling requires additional protection including face shields and chemical-resistant clothing.
Emergency response
We maintain spill response kits throughout the facility. All employees are trained in spill containment procedures. Emergency contact information is posted at all work stations. We coordinate with local fire departments.
Hazardous materials handling
Employees handling hazardous residues receive HAZWOPER training. We maintain current SDS files for all materials encountered. Proper labeling and segregation protocols are strictly enforced.
Safety audits
We conduct monthly internal safety audits covering equipment, procedures, and housekeeping. Findings are documented and corrective actions tracked to completion. Third-party audits are welcomed.
Food-grade compliance
Food-grade IBC reconditioning requires strict adherence to FDA regulations and industry best practices. Our food-grade program includes dedicated equipment and enhanced documentation.
FDA 21 CFR 177.1520
This regulation governs olefin polymers (including HDPE) for food contact. We verify that tote materials meet these requirements and document prior-use history to ensure appropriate reuse applications.
Cleaning validation
Food-grade cleaning protocols are validated to remove prior contents to acceptable levels. We use approved cleaning agents and verify results through visual inspection and, when required, laboratory testing.
Food-grade process controls
Inspection and testing protocols
| Inspection point | Method | Criteria | Documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cage integrity | Visual + physical | No cracks, bends, or corrosion affecting structure | Condition grade recorded |
| Liner condition | Visual inspection | No cracks, holes, or contamination staining | Pass/fail with notes |
| Valve function | Manual operation | Smooth operation, complete seal | Test result recorded |
| Pressure test | 3 PSI for 10 minutes | No pressure loss, no visible leaks | Test certificate issued |
| Pallet condition | Visual + load test | No broken boards, adequate support | Condition grade recorded |
| Cleanliness | Visual + olfactory | No residue, no odor for food-grade | Cleaning certificate |
DOT transportation compliance
UN performance packaging
IBC totes used for hazardous materials transport must meet UN performance standards. We verify and document UN ratings for applicable containers.
Load securement
All shipments comply with DOT load securement requirements under 49 CFR 393.
Shipping documentation
Every shipment includes proper documentation: bill of lading, packing list, and hazmat paperwork when applicable. We maintain copies for our records and provide duplicates on request.
Driver qualifications
Our drivers hold valid CDL licenses with appropriate endorsements. Hazmat endorsements are maintained for applicable loads. We verify clean driving records and conduct regular drug testing.
Vehicle maintenance
All vehicles undergo regular inspection and maintenance per DOT requirements. Pre-trip inspections are documented. Annual DOT inspections are current for all equipment.
Documentation packages
Basic documentation
Included with all reconditioned totes at no extra charge.
Food-grade package
Required documentation for food contact applications.
Hazmat package
Documentation for regulated materials transport.

Common compliance questions
How long are pressure test certificates valid?
Pressure test certificates are valid at the time of testing and document condition at that point. For ongoing use, we recommend annual retesting or testing after any repair work. Some applications may require more frequent testing.
Can used totes be used for food products?
Yes, with proper selection and documentation. Food-grade totes must have single-use, food-compatible prior contents and undergo appropriate cleaning. We provide certificates of cleaning and prior-use declarations for food-grade applications.
What is the service life of an IBC?
UN-rated IBCs for hazmat have a 5-year service life from manufacture date. For non-hazmat applications, service life depends on condition rather than age. We inspect and grade all totes regardless of age.
Do you provide SDS documentation?
We do not provide SDS for materials previously stored in totes, as that information comes from the original product manufacturer. We do provide prior-contents declarations based on customer-provided information.
Are your processes auditable?
Yes. We welcome customer audits and third-party inspections. Our processes are documented and records are maintained for minimum 3 years. Contact us to schedule an audit visit.
What training do your employees receive?
All employees receive safety orientation, job-specific training, and annual refreshers. Specialized roles require additional certifications including forklift operation, HAZWOPER, and DOT hazmat training as applicable.
